THAT my friend is a bullshit attempt to curb the used market. Its called a digilink license, and the driver is $1899!!! That driver must be registered to your Avid account and it is not transferrable. If you buy one used, you have to buy a license in order to activate the driver. Right? Avid used to sell these fucking things for $8000, now they cost $3000 yet they’re no more powerful than your cellphone. So the idea is that you wanna make it a bitch to try and buy a used Avid HDX card. I have no doubt that it was the correct move, though it did come across as a ‘fooled ya sucker!’ you say.īut hey, you wanna talk about them being assholes? Here’s one for ya. I’ve poured over years of avid’s finance statements, and you can even see the change of direction in their cashflow when they opened up to 3rd party. There were some major changes in the company around that time, where in the red and realized they would be eating dirt if they didn’t stop depending on their hardware to sustain them. Can't do that with the way these subscription services work unless you want to spend half your life bouncing everything as audio etc.Version 9 they opened up the field to 3rd party interfaces Hell, I keep clones of my drives from different OS's over time, and so should I need a piece of work from say 2006 or 2012, I can boot from those system drives and bounce. And more importantly (to me at least, as I have hundred if not thousands of legacy songs/projects), these services go away, and you don't have them anymore in five years as they are out of business and you are just straight up fucked. but if I had to login and "re-subscribe" every time I wanted to use my Soundtoys plugs ins or whatnot, I'd be pretty pissed.
I'm a guy who works on a lot of different projects, and sometimes will go months without working at all, and I will have certain plugs I will lean on for a bit, then move on.
there are some that are fair, like kinda the "rent to own" Xfer Serum model, and Roland allows you to retain one or two a year last I checked, but companies like Avid can eat it in my opinion, as what they do isn't right. sigh.īut yeah, it's been awhile, and I'm not up to date on all subscription plans or how they have changed.
